Exercise for the interscapular region: from release to endurance
In interscapular complaints, the effect of exercise depends as much on how often as on what is done. As these muscles work at low intensity all day, the programme is built to be applied briefly and frequently.

Self-release
A tennis ball against a wall is applied along the inner border of the shoulder blade. Stop at a tender point and hold pressure for thirty to sixty seconds.
The ball is not brought directly over the spine. Pressure should be applied to the muscle tissue between the blade and the spine.
Extension over a foam roller placed crosswise completes the release and opens the front of the chest. The lower back must not arch.
Endurance work
Lying prone with arms by the sides and squeezing the shoulder blades together is the core endurance exercise. Begin with fifteen-second holds.
Drawing the blade back and down with a resistance band is added. The shoulders must not rise toward the ears; movement comes from the blade.
Wall slides with the back against the wall work thoracic extension and scapular control at once and need no equipment.
Micro-exercises at a desk
A shoulder blade squeeze every hour interrupts static load and increases blood flow. Ten repetitions and ten seconds is enough.
Raising the arms and reaching back opens the front of the chest and reduces interscapular tension. It can be done standing or seated.
These short applications are markedly more effective than one long evening session. Frequency matters more than duration here.
Key points
- The interscapular muscles work all day, so the programme spreads across it.
- The ball is not brought directly over the spine.
- In scapular work the shoulders must not rise toward the ears.
- A blade squeeze every hour interrupts static load.
- Frequency matters more than duration here.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a massage gun?
Short use over the muscle between the blades can be relieving. It should not be used directly over the spinous processes or the shoulder blade.
Should I exercise while in pain?
Yes, gently and within the pain-free range. Immobility increases symptoms here, and short, frequent light work is the best-tolerated approach.
How long until results?
Release and stretching give relief the same day. A clear reduction in the burning depends on endurance developing and takes four to six weeks.
