Desk setup, phone use and sleep in kyphosis
The most common reason symptoms persist in kyphosis is that most of the day is still spent in the same forward-flexed position despite the exercises. The adjustments below reduce that load directly.

Working setup
The top of the screen should sit at eye level. A low screen pulls both head and back forward, and is the most common source of daily load in kyphosis.
The arms should be supported. Unsupported arms draw the shoulder girdle forward and make scapular control harder.
A chair's back support should support the mid-back rather than the lower back, letting the trunk stay upright with less effort.
Phone, bags and breaks
Rounding the upper back while looking at a phone is common. Raising the phone above chest height is the easiest change to make and the quickest to show an effect.
A bag on one shoulder pulls the trunk to one side and disturbs scapular control. A two-strap backpack worn on both shoulders is preferred.
Standing up every forty-five to sixty minutes for a few extension movements beats one long break. Interrupting static load is decisive here.
Sleep and rest
Too high a pillow pushes the head forward and increases morning stiffness. A medium-height pillow is generally more comfortable in kyphosis.
Watching television or using a phone half-sitting in bed rounds the back. That position should not be sustained without back support.
Lying for five minutes in the evening over a rolled towel placed lengthwise along the spine counterbalances the forward load accumulated through the day.
Key points
- A low screen is the most common source of daily load in kyphosis.
- Unsupported arms draw the shoulder girdle forward.
- Chair support should support the mid-back.
- Raising the phone is the change that shows an effect fastest.
- Five minutes over a rolled towel in the evening counterbalances the day's load.
Frequently asked questions
Is a standing desk helpful?
It helps by allowing a change of position. The back can still round while standing, however, so screen height must be at eye level there too.
Is a firm mattress good for kyphosis?
A very firm mattress does not support the shoulder and hip prominences and causes discomfort. A medium-firm mattress suits most people best.
What should I do about my child's posture?
Increase opportunities to move rather than constantly correcting them. Limiting screen time and regular sport is the most effective approach to postural kyphosis during growth. If the curve does not correct on forward bending, assessment is needed.
