Shoulder health at a desk: arm support and break rhythm

In desk-based workers the source of shoulder and interscapular symptoms usually converges on one point: the shoulder girdle muscles carrying the arm's weight all day.

Arm support

The arm's weight is a significant proportion of body weight. Unsupported, the shoulder girdle muscles carry it, and that load lasts hours.

Using a chair with armrests or sitting close enough to rest the elbows on the desk is the single most effective adjustment here.

Elbows should be at roughly ninety degrees. A desk that is too high raises the shoulders; one that is too low rounds the trunk.

Keyboard, mouse and screen

Mouse and keyboard should sit close to the body. Reaching out slides the blade forward and leaves the controlling muscles lengthened.

Symptoms are more frequent in the mousing arm. Occasionally switching hands or using a different position reduces that asymmetry.

The screen should be directly in front. Working turned to one side creates one-sided load on the shoulder girdle.

Breaks and movement

Shoulder circles and blade squeezes every forty-five to sixty minutes interrupt static load. These short breaks beat one long one.

Raising the arms and reaching back opens the front of the chest and corrects shoulder girdle position. It can be done standing or seated.

Overhead housework and shelf tidying should be broken up. These activities quickly strain already fatigued muscles.

Key points

  • Unsupported arms keep the shoulder girdle working all day.
  • Armrests are the single most effective adjustment here.
  • Reaching out slides the shoulder blade forward.
  • Symptoms are more frequent in the mousing arm.
  • Overhead tasks should be broken up.

Frequently asked questions

Does a vertical mouse help?

It helps wrist and forearm comfort for some people. For shoulder symptoms, mouse position and arm support are what matter.

Is standing better for the shoulder?

The arms remain unsupported standing and the same load applies. The benefit is allowing a change of position; desk height must be set correctly for standing too.

Should exercise be done during breaks?

Short activation movements are ideal during breaks. The main strength programme should be done separately and regularly.
